Speaking on the news of the killing of a woman in Melville Terrace, Dublin 11 this morning, People Before Profit Councillor for Finglas-Ballymun, Conor Reddy, said:
“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the news from Melville Terrace today. Another woman has lost her life in shocking and tragic circumstances, leaving loved ones and our wider community facing terrible grief.
“This happened only minutes from where Jennie Poole was murdered in 2021, and a short distance from where Brazilian woman Fabiola Camara de Campos Silva was killed the same year. These women are remembered and their loss is still felt deeply in the local area. The news this morning brings pain back to the surface for many in the community.
“We’re facing an epidemic of femicide and gender-based violence across this island. Women’s Aid recorded a 33% increase in disclosures of domestic abuse in 2025. By July this year, the number of women who had died violently in the Republic had already exceeded the total for the whole of last year. While the circumstances of today’s killing are still being investigated, the need for action is clear. We need to understand and confront what is driving violence against women.
“We need to do all we can to build a society where women, girls and children can live safely and securely, in their homes and in their communities.
“The determination of Jennie Poole’s family, backed by our entire community, helped secure the passage of Jennie’s Law this year. We need that same urgency and commitment to tackle the other drivers and enablers of gender based violence.
“In the next month or two, a report on domestic and gender-based violence in Dublin 11 will be published. I helped secure funding for this through Dublin City Council’s North West Area discretionary budget last year. It follows the example of the Unveiling the Shadows report in Dublin 10, commissioned by Saoirse Domestic Violence Services and supported with Council funding following a proposal from my colleague, Councillor Hazel de Nortúin.
“These reports must lead to action. Women leaving abusive relationships need access to safe, secure housing. We need more refuge places, and women and children using them must have the time and support they need to move to safety too. Outside of direct supports for survivors, we need properly funded education and prevention measures to tackle the roots of violence, coercion and abuse in wider society.
“As the investigation into this shocking killing continues, I'd appeal to anyone who was in the Melville Terrace area between midnight and 5am this morning, to contact Gardaí if they saw or heard anything that could help. Anyone with information, including dashcam footage from the area should contact Finglas Garda Station on 01 666 7500.
“My thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones, friends and neighbours at this devastating time.”
