People Before Profit MLA Gerry Carroll has called a rally at Belfast City Hall in solidarity with people in Charlottesville following the murder of anti-fascist protester Heather Heyer at the weekend. Speaking before the event, Mr Carroll said:
‘We have seen a rise of the far right in the US. No doubt Trump has given them a platform and a voice, but we have also seen the rise of far right groups across Europe as well. The fascist group Britain First were on the streets of our own city recently and are planning to strengthen their base here. Their plan is to whip up fear and hatred and to scapegoat muslims and refugees. They cannot be allowed to do this.’
‘I am calling this rally in solidarity with those injured and killed in Charlottesville at the weekend, but also as a warning to fascist organisations looking at Belfast as a place to set up shop. They have no business here and any attempt to organise will be met with fierce resistance. The people of Belfast have made their feelings clear time and again – fascists are not welcome here.’
‘I’m calling on all progressives to join us on Wednesday night to send a clear, loud message with one voice. It is crucial that we are united on this issue.’
The rally will take place at 5.30pm on Wednesday 16th August.
