“I am delighted to host a panel discussion at Parliament Buildings tomorrow, featuring workers and trade union representatives who are challenging Ulster University’s disgraceful decision to cut 450 jobs,” Gerry Carroll said.
“Shamefully, workers were informed of the news on a Teams call, with no opportunity to seek clarification about which roles were being impacted and when. This shows utter contempt for workers and their union representatives.”
“The priorities of university management have been abundantly clear for some time now. £350 million was spent on the new Belfast campus. There is an endless pot of money for ‘international outreach’ in the likes of Qatar. A recent event honouring Arnold Schwarzenegger cost an eyewatering £45,000. This is financial recklessness of the highest order.”
“The corporatisation and commercialisation of higher education has been an unmitigated disaster, from start to finish. Flashy projects have continually been prioritised over jobs and the quality of education.”
“I commend the workers and trade unions who are fighting back against these cuts, to save jobs and ensure the future sustainability of courses at UU. Please join us tomorrow morning to hear directly from those impacted.”
