Speaking following news that Ulster University is make up to 450 workers redundant, Gerry Carroll said: "The University recently spent over £350 million on a new campus in Belfast and almost £85,000 on trips to Qatar which included meetings with Qatari government officials."

"The priorities of those running UU are clear. Indeed, these priorities have been laid bare every time UCU and Unite workers at the University have been forced to strike for fair pay in recent years."

"When it comes to flashy projects, the University of Ulster can find money or borrow it from the Executive. Yet when it comes to jobs and wages, the money cannot be found."

"I am demanding answers from the University of Ulster: what jobs they plan to cut, what impact it will have on the education of students, and where else could the funds be found instead."

"I am also calling on the Economy Minister, who has responsibility for Higher Education, to intervene. Leaving workers and students in the dark after such a devastating announcement is a disgrace. People Before Profit is fully supportive of the workers and trade unions who are working to challenge this decision."
