Speaking following the eviction of a Housing Executive tenant in west Belfast, Gerry Carroll said: "I was disgusted by the scenes in West Belfast this morning as a family was evicted from their home by masked men, under the eye of the PSNI, at the bidding of the Housing Executive.
“This is a shameful moment for the Housing Executive, the PSNI and the Minister for Communities. The Housing Executive's inhumane succession policy has seen scores of families across west Belfast become homeless in recent months. These tenants have lost their family homes in the immediate aftermath of a bereavement, through no fault of their own."
"At every turn, the Housing Executive and the Communities Minister have shown complete disregard for people's mental and physical wellbeing. They have refused to offer Caitríona and her family suitable alternative accommodation. They have also refused to meaningfully engage with the family or her tenants union, CATU."
"The Housing Executive simply wants to claw back its stock in an attempt to cover for Stormont's utter failure to build enough social homes. In a housing emergency, private and social landlords shouldn't be allowed to evict tenants at will. I extend my solidarity to Caitríona and her family, who have been through an unacceptable amount of trauma at the hands of the state. I also commend CATU and the people of west Belfast for resisting these evictions and the support they've given this family."
