Bank Bailout: Robbery of Taxpayers Must End

In a statement tonight the People Before Profit Alliance called for an end to the bailout of the banks. A day after low paid public servants have been told they will not be refunded pay cuts imposed in December the Minister for Finance has announced that he will put €8 billion into Anglo Irish bank and that he may put in another €10 billion.

Councillor Richard Boyd Barrett said:

"There will be rage in many homes throughout the country tonight. As families worry about how they will pay their mortgages they will be disgusted that the banks and developers are being bailed out yet again. For ordinary people the last year has seen deep cuts in their pay and the services they badly need. Yet the government can find vast resources to help their friends.

Its time for a mass demonstration of public anger at the actions of this awful government. Rather than cutting a deal which will do more damage to public services trade union leaders should be organising to topple this government.

We need an end to the bank guarantee scheme, an end to Nama and an end to this governments crazy plans to waste taxpayers money. The banks should be nationalised and the financial system should be used to invest in jobs to get people back to work".
