“People Before Profit has called for intervention to save 130 jobs at Harland and Wolf, arguing the jobs could be utilised to combat climate change. MLA Gerry Carroll stated:

“We need immediate intervention to save these 130 jobs. Rather than the workers being thrown on the scrap heap, we could be utilising their skills for the urgent task of tackling global warming

This workforce is perfectly suited for the purpose of developing of renewable technology. Recently, the 130 strong workforce specialised in producing energy based and marine technology for Norwegian company Dolphin Drilling. This included development of technology for windmills and renewable energy. There is, therefore, an opportunity for the government to step in, save these jobs, and utilise the resources for the urgent task of combating climate change.

The North is currently the only devolved region with no regional targets for tackling CO2 emissions. We are way behind other places when it comes to concrete plans for averting climate chaos. So there is a massive urgency for the development of renewable technology here.

We demand immediate intervention to save these jobs, and for the workers skills to be utilised for the task of combating global warming, and for the development of renewable technology here in Belfast.”
