Richard Boyd Barrett TD Expresses “Shock And Outrage” Over Planning Permission For “Utterly Inappropriate Development” In Bullock Harbour

Richard Boyd Barrett TD expresses “shock and outrage” over planning permission for “utterly inappropriate development” in Bullock Harbour

Richard Boyd Barrett, People Before Profit TD for Dún Laoghaire and chair of Save Our Seafront, expresses “shock and outrage” over the decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant planning permission for an utterly inappropriate development in Bullock Harbour.

In a statement this morning, Richard Boyd Barrett TD, described the decision by An Bord Pleanala to grant a planning permission for 3, 3 storey luxury villas, 2 apartments and a cafe and a number of other buildings at Bulloch Harbour as incomprehensible.

Bulloch Harbour is a unique public amenity used by people of all ages.  It is an important part of the heritage of South County Dublin.  The proposed development will effectively turn the harbour into a private area with part of the seafront area being effectively privatised and used as the front gardens for the three 3 storey villas which will each measure €412sqm.

The development is being proposed by Ricahrd Barrett’s Bartra and is the second planning application for this site.  The previous plan included 10 apartments as well as the villas and was refused by An Bord Pleanala.

Richard Boyd Barrett said: “I am utterly shocked that Bartra Developers have been given planning permission for this development in Bullock Harbour.  The plan for 3 412sqm 3 storey mansions with roof gardens that front out onto the rocks will turn this beautiful public amenity harbour into an elite residential area.

“Bullock is used by local fishermen, all sorts of marine leisure and people of all ages as a public amenity.  The rocks to the rear of the harbour are used for swimming off.  All of this, along with the residents of the harbour itself make for a very unique place in South County Dublin, the whole nature of the harbour will be destroyed by this development.

“The inclusion in the plans of a cafe and buildings other marine related uses, I believe, is a cynical move by the developer to make his plan fit with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Development Plan that is zoned to “provide for waterfront development and harbour related uses”.  It is quite clear that what Richard Barrett wants is 3 seafront mansions and 2 luxury apartments that will have asking prices in the millions, and if the cafe, boat building workshop and the fishermen’s huts ever see the light of day I will be very surprised.

“It is utterly incomprehensible to me that plans to build on the piece of seafront that gets washed over by waves whenever there is a high sea, have been given the go ahead.  At a time when protecting the environment is at the forefront of all our minds, it seems utterly bizarre that any developer could be allowed to build on such a site, and it certainly begs the question what impact this will have on our coastline and flooding in the area.

“I will be working with all the concerned residents who objected to this planning permission to protect our harbour and save it from this kind of inappropriate development.”
