Ruth O’Connor

Ruth O’Connor

Ruth is the People Before Profit Local Election candidate for the Glencullen and Sandyford LEA.

She is a Midwife and an activist. Ruth was forced to emigrate to England in 2010, and later to Australia, due to the then government’s embargo on all recruitment to the health service.

Ruth now works in the Irish Health Service where she faces many challenges on a daily basis while caring for women, babies and their families.

Ruth like many young workers is personally affected by the housing crisis – spiralling rents mean that she was forced to live at home with her parents. Now she is paying extortionate rent with no hope of ever being able to afford to buy her own home.

Ruth is a passionate campaigner for women’s rights and the separation of church and state. Most significantly Ruth was a leading voice and activist in Dun Laoghaire Together for Yes and also played a lead role in the fight to make our new National Maternity Hospital at Elm Park (St Vincent’s) Public and Secular.

As a Midwife, Ruth joined fellow colleagues and took to the picket lines this year at several hospitals across Dublin, fighting for safe staffing levels and pay equality with other allied healthcare professionals as a way to combat the ongoing retention and recruitment crisis.
