A crowd of up to 10,000 people enjoyed some Summer sunshine at Africa Day, which took place in the Iveagh Gardens in Dublin yesterday. Spectators were treated to music, food stalls, sports exhibitions and much much more to celebrate Africa Day and multicultrual Ireland.
Irish musical acts performed such as Frances Black, Jape, Paddy Casey, Republic of Loose, Kila & international acts such as Vieux Farka Toure (Mali) & Niwel Tsumbu (Congolese/Irish). The GAA, FAI and SARI held sports events for kids and there were food and art/craft stalls and workshops throughout the day. The People Before Profit Alliance welcomes events such as Africa Day.
We believe that we need to develop Ireland as a genuinely egalitarian and multicultural society that respects human rights and values the contribution of all.
In recessions, right-wing politicians tend to focus on those least able to defend their interests. The dismantling or downgrading of independent structures put in place to strengthen and protect equality, justice and human rights for all in Ireland has been a particularly nasty feature of recessionary panic-driven government.
On 23rd May the Save Our Lady’s Hospital campaign held a protest at ward closures at the hospital. Over 200 people turned out in support of the protest calling for a reversal of the decision.
Councillor Joan Collins, (People Before Profit Alliance candidate in the Crumlin area), said “It is an outrage that the HSE spent €17m on private advisors and spindoctors last year while it will not provide the money to protect our childrens’ health. It is a disgrace that because the State’s largest children’s hospital will not be open for our children this summer. Wards and operating theatres are to be closed because of a €9.6 million short fall yet nearly €17 m is spent on advisors. Spending on advisors has been cut by €150,000 in the last year but Our Lady’s is to have a cut of nearly €10 million.”

THE PROBLEM: SYSTEMIC FAILURE
The centralisation of government in Kildare Street ensures that local council proposals to meet current economic challenges, howsoever laudable, represent no more than a shifting of the deck-chairs aboard the Titanic. Centralisation overburdens national decision-making, weakening the government’s capacity to decide national policy whilst simultaneously depriving local councils of the authority to determine local priorities [See The Barrington Report (1991)].
CAMPAIGN FOR BETTER GOVERNMENT
Now is the time to challenge decision-making based on ‘friends, family and favours’. In order to meet the current dilemmas facing our society, local government in Roscommon requires real participation. To this end, Tim stands for:
· regular public meetings with popular involvement in all council decisions
· a directly elected Mayor with a cap on the salaries of public officials
A local group of protestors is holding a Demonstration at the condition of services at Kerry General Hospital. Specifically, they are targeting the lack of a permanent Mammography and cancer service.

The 14 People Before Profit candidates in the local elections called on the public to show their anger at health cuts by supporting hospital protests next Saturday (May 23) at Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children Crumlin and at Loughlinstown Hospital.
The protests are in response to cuts at both hospitals.
Last week the Save our Crumlin Children’s Hospital Campaign revealed that the due to a forecasted deficit of €9.6 million, three wards will shut down this year, starting with St Joseph ’s. Two more will close in July and August. St Josephs is due to close today following the closure of an operating theatre on Monday.
