The revelation that 11,500 women were affected by the out of date testing of samples at Quest Diagnostics will do little to instil confidence in the scheme said People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith.

The TD said that while just 5000 were invited back for retesting, the scale of the original issue would again undermine women’s confidence in the system.

“The core issue here remains the outsourcing to labs like Quest and the long litany of errors, glitches, sub-contracting and false negatives that have followed.

“Minister Harris needs to stop issuing reassurances to women and announce that he intends to fully repatriate the service to publically run institutions that operate on a not for profit basis and end the catastrophic decision to outsource and competitively
