Government urged to change position on Bill to ban Fossil Fuel Exploration,
Brid Smith TD of People before Profit has said the continued attempt to block her Climate Emergency Bill by the Government showed an utter disregard for the scientific evidence .
She was speaking after a meeting with the Ceanns office on the imposition of a money message which is blocking progress of the bill which would ban fossil fuel exploration.
“Despite showing the Ceann that the Governments case is entirely bogus, he is unwilling to reverse his decision on the money message issue at this time” she said afterwards.
“Ironically , this hinges on the idea that the state would owe something to companies affected. Neither the state nor anyone owe anything to those companies whose very reason to exist is putting the entire planet in danger.”
“We have to call time on the fossil fuel industry before they call time the planet” she added
“The present extreme heat wave in Europe is a harbinger of the new norm in climate, if we don’t shut off the profit sources of the fossil fuel industries we are condemning millions of people and large parts of the planet to destruction”
The TD said that she will consider a possible judicial review and will work with others to amend standing orders to insure opposition bills cannot be stopped on bogus grounds such as the use of money messages.
“Anyone who cares about the future of this planet has to be outraged by these manouvers in our Parliament. These games won’t work, Today or tomorrow we will get this bill passed and ban fossil fuel exploration.”
