People Before Profit MLA Carroll Slams Spanish State’s Response to Catalonia Vote
Speaking after the Spanish police attacked voters in Catalonia yesterday, Gerry Carroll condemned the violence: ‘The violence that we witnessed yesterday at the hands of Spanish forces was nothing short of undemocratic brutality. I welcome the calls for general strike in Catalonia in response to the violence and I stand in full solidarity with all of the workers who take part.’
‘The silence from EU leaders has been deafening however the EU commission has chosen sided with the Spanish state that left innocent voters beaten and bloody. The so called bastion of human rights has betrayed the people of Catalonia and legitimised actions which are illegal under its own laws.’
‘People Before Profit calls on all European leaders to condemn the actions of the Spanish state against innocent voters. We call on people everywhere to support the right of Catalonians in their fight for self-determination and fully support the result of the vote for independence.’
