TD demands that US labs at the centre of screening scandal be blocked from tendering for HPV test

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has called on the government to bar the private US labs, that are engulfed in the Cervical Check scandal, from tendering to provide the HPV test.

The TD said: “These private labs should not be allowed to go near any future tests or screening processes for women in this country and they should not be considered for the HPV test contract.

“I would demand that the state resources and directly provides the HPV service.

“At the very least these US labs which are connected with the Cervical Smear scandal should be excluded from any future dealings with Irish healthcare.”

The TD went on to mention Leo Varadkar’s promise of mediation to the women involved in the cervical check controversy.

She said: “The Taoiseach promised to settle with these women and take the private labs to court if needed. This appears to be total doublespeak as this has not happened yet.”

Bríd Smith also noted that she has still not received the information from the government or the HSE about where the false negative tests came from.

“The government and HSE continue to delay releasing the information about where the false negative test came from. I believe this information would show that they came from the private US labs. This would show that the decision to outsource these tests to private US labs was the cause of this tragedy.”
