TD Urges Support For Climate And Extinction Rebellion Protest In Dublin On Saturday

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith has urged the public to support tomorrows protest at Merion Sq. at 2pm on climate change and the mass extinction of species. Similar protests are planned in a number of towns and cities across the country.

The rallies are in solidarity with a London rally called by the campaign group ‘Extinction Rebellion’.

The TD pointed to government opposition to a People Before Profit Bill (Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Amendment) (Climate Emergency Measures) Bill 2018) that would ban exploration for new sources of fossil fuels as an example of the blindness of Government and corporate policy on climate change.

Bríd Smith TD urged people to attend the Dublin event saying: “The recent IPCC report and the WWF report paint a very stark picture of where humanity is heading. It is clear this Government and many of the elite here and across the globe will not take the kind of radical measures needed to avert a climate catastrophe which is already having horrendous consequences for large parts of our planet.

“The only way to affect the kind of change needed is to mobilise a mass movement and I hope this protest is the start of a real rebellion against climate change and the wipeout of the Earth’s biodiversity.”

Bríd Smith will be addressing tomorrows protest along with other environmentalists and campaigners. Richard Boyd Barrett and Gino Kenny will also be in attendance.
