John Uwhumiakpor

I am Mr Oghenetano John Uwhumiakpor and I am delighted to be standing in next year’s local elections for People Before Profit. My family and I came here from Nigeria since 2006, I am a care worker upon granted the leave to remain in 2008 and as well working in the community a good number of years and we are very proud to call Balbriggan our home. Over the last 12 years, Balbriggan has become one of the most diverse communities in the country, with people from Ireland, Africa, Eastern Europe and India liv¬ing together. This has also brought challenges, however, and to make sure people can live together in harmony, I have been involved in a range of community groups and integration activities.

Here are a few of them:
In 2010, I was a founding member of the Family Mir¬ror Forum to encourage families that were finding it difficult to integrate to come together and share their experiences.

In 2011, I helped to set up the Balbriggan Integra¬tion Forum, acting as its General Secretary for seven years. I am currently the Public Relations Officer for the group, organising events

In 2017, I helped to found the Nigeria Balbriggan Forum. This group is closely linked with the Integra¬tion Forum, helping Nigerian people to integrate and participate with local activities. For example, we are very proud to be currently involved in the Bal¬briggan Tidy Towns activities
.
• In response to anti-social behaviour in the area I helped to set up the Dun Saithne Residents Asso¬ciation in 2017. It was my honour to be voted chair¬person of the group as tasked with making sure the Gardaí are aware of issues locally. I also set up a dep¬utation meeting that took place at the Fingal County Council chamber in Swords.

• I am an active member of the Flemington Local De¬velopment Group, bringing up issues concerning the overall development of the community. I am presently taking part in a research project in collab¬oration with the Balbriggan Integration Forum to find out the best ways of addressing these issues in the Fleming¬ton area of Balbriggan.

Note! I have BA honours in Psychology from Dublin Business School, and diploma in social studies and counselling skills ARLT foundation, Hague.
