People Before Profit Reps Hit Out At Planning Permission For Waste Incinerator

People Before Profit representatives have hit out at a decision by the Department of Infrastructure to grant planning permission for an incinerator at the Hightown Road in Glengormley. Gerry Carroll MLA stated: “This is a shocking decision, which People Before Profit are opposed to. If this goes ahead it will be inherently harmful to the environment and it flies in the face of both the wishes of local residents and the concerns of environmental campaigners. This development contradicts a previous planning decision that rightly rejected such an incinerator.”

“As a City Councillor, I myself opposed this development going ahead. I am aghast that the department are now issuing such a strong recommendation for a project that will wreak havoc on our environment. We need to move toward a society where waste is recycled and reused, not burned or dumped, both of which have disastrous effects on our environment. We need to build a politics that puts people and planet before profit.”

People Before Profit Cllr Matt Collins added, “Environmental campaigners and local residents have consistently articulated opposition to this project, thousands of objections were lodged and campaigners are vowing to challenge this unjustifiable decision. People Before Profit supports them every step of the way.”
