LGBT Policy

People Before Profit campaigns for full equality for LBGT people. We want:

* An end to the ban on gay or bisexual men donating blood.

* The abolition of section 37.1 of the Employment Equality Act which allows educational and medical institutions run by religious bodies to discriminate against those who do not conform to the religious ethos

* Hate crime legislation to deal with homophobic and transphobic attacks and proper recording of data on such attacks.

* Compulsory, age-appropriate sex education which deals with issues around gender, sexuality, consent and contraception

The Irish Blood Transfusion Service lifted its ban on gay men donating blood on January 16, 2017.
The lifetime ban was replaced by a 12-month deferral system, whereby gay men who haven’t had sex in the preceding 12 months are able to donate blood. This deferral period still discriminates against many gay and bisexual men as
there is no scientific evidence to show that they should be excluded.
